Dog Friendly

Dogs love being outside in nature, and we love to spoil them in every which way. So, this year, why not create your pet the perfect dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary for them to spend hazy spring days and warm summer evenings in?

The ideal outdoor sanctuary for your dog should be both safe and stimulating. Think lush, soft grass for playtime, shady spots for cooling down, and shelter from the hot sun. Plus, plenty of cosy corners for enjoying a well-earned treat and nap.

Experts in luxury pet care, here’s our Ruffingtons step-by-step guide to building the perfect garden paradise for your dog.

Step 1: Secure your garden

When creating a dog-friendly garden, safety comes first. You need to make sure the space is both safe for your dog and for your neighbours. Think about:

  • Fencing: Ensure your garden has a secure fence around the permitter. It must be tall enough to prevent your dog from being able to jump over it – and be sure to check for any gaps where small dogs could get through and escape.
  • Gates: Install either self-closing or lockable gates to prevent any daring escapes for freedom.
  • Shade and Shelter: Dogs can overheat much quicker than us humans. Trees, pergolas, gazebos, or even a humble bush can provide much-needed shade. Trees also have an added bonus of attracting songbirds to your garden – creating an idyllic soundtrack to your dog’s sanctuary. Be sure to avoid Horse Chestnut trees, though, as conkers can be eaten by dogs and cause gut blockages.

Step 2: Choose Dog-Safe Plants and Landscaping

Dogs love to sniff, chew, and sometimes even roll around in plants. So, your pet-friendly outdoor sanctuary should bare this in mind. Make sure your garden contains dog-safe plants and shrubs such as sunflowers, marigolds, and rosemary.

Bluebells, crocuses, daffodils, and foxgloves are just some plants that are toxic to dogs when ingested. Be safe and check out every plant or tree before purchasing.

Step 3: Make Playtime Fun

Plan your garden around your dog’s personality, so think about how they like to play and relax. Here’s some ideas of what we think could work well depending on your space:

  • Digging Area: If your dog loves to dig, design them a designated pit filled with sand or soil and hide toys or treats for them to find.
  • Splash Zone: Setting up a dog-friendly water-based area is perfect for hot days – as many dogs love to splash about. Always make sure that shady areas are available to them and they have plenty of water to drink – and remember that towel!
  • Agility Course: For those dogs who have lots of energy, why not create an agility course with tunnels, ramps, or weave poles to help make your bond even stronger and improve your communications skills.
  • Sensory Experience: Grow some fragrant herbs like dill, purple basil and thyme which are none-toxic for dogs and goes well in many meals. Giving both you and your dog a sensory experience you will love and a way to add extra flavour to your favourite foods.

Step 4: Create a Calm and Relaxing Vibe

Your dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary should be as relaxing as it is stimulating for your dog. Be sure to think about:

  • Quiet Corners: Set up peaceful areas away from busy footpaths or noisy neighbours, where possible so your dog can relax after a long day.
  • Soft Lighting: If your dog enjoys evenings outdoors, consider gentle solar garden lights or fairy lights for a cosy atmosphere. They’re also great for making the garden a place for you and your family to enjoy after the sun goes down in the summer months.
  • Water Access: Always ensure there’s a fresh water available for when your furry friend feels thirsty.
  • Favourite Treats: Be sure to keep their favourite Ruffingtons treats on hand for the ultimate relaxing vibe.

Step 5: Keep Your Garden Well Maintained

Like all gardens, even a dog-friendly one needs a little care and attention to stay safe and enjoyable.

  • Tidy Up: Regularly check the area for any damaged toys, sharp sticks, overgrown bushes or rubbish that could pose a hazard to your pet.
  • Pest Control: If treating weeds or deterring pests, make sure you use dog-safe products.

Creating a dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary to be enjoyed by both you and your pet doesn’t require a lot of space or a huge budget. With some thoughtful planning, you can build a space that fulfils all your dog’s natural instincts while keeping them safe, content and away from the furniture.
